Lucy Rose // Interview

Just four singles in, and with her star firmly in the ascendant, Lucy is making her own destiny and shaping her future like no other new artist. A mixture of true grit, sheer dedication and an unshakeable sense of self has all led Lucy to the kind of status that most new artists dream of but can only achieve through record company support.

Until her recent signing to Columbia Records, Lucy Rose had none of this, but her heart-stoppingly poignant songs and cracked porcelain voice saw her enter 2012 with YouTube hits, radio plays and crowds like nobody else out there.

Ahead of her performance at ARTS CLUB this Thursday (16th Oct) we caught up with her to find out what we can expect…

When did you first become interested in writing music?

I suppose when I was younger, I’d played for a while but only when I was teaching myself guitar did I find myself writing some of my own music.

Did any particular artists influence you at that time?

I think I was absorbing nearly all the music that was around me, it was only when I was older did I come across my favourite and most influential artists like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Tom Waits and Carole King.

Getting signed to Columbia Records must have been an amazing moment for you. How did it come about?

I hadn’t had interest from labels for many years and it was only until I had finished recording my first record which was done in my parents living room that any labels came forward with interest. I immediately felt like Columbia was the right place for me and it felt like a real achievement the day I signed to them.

You’ve played some incredible gigs over the past few years. Do you have a highlight?

Glastonbury this summer really was a highlight for me. I’ve hardly done any gigs this year in this country and being on The Other Stage I felt the pressure more than ever. I really wasn’t sure if people would be coming to see me as I’m in between albums but seeing all the people there really pushed me to finish this next record.

What was it like touring with Bombay Bicycle Club?

They are such amazing boys and great musicians, I feel so privileged to have been able to sing and travel with them for as long as I did. I learnt a lot of from them and their encouragement was instrumental to my confidence.

You’ve previously spoken out about being grouped together with other female singer songwriters. What do you think separates you from the rest?

I don’t mind being grouped with other females, I think the more woman out there making music and being successful the better. I sometimes think people make lazy comparisons grouping women all in the same category which normally doesn’t happen with boys or bands. I’m not sure if anything separates me from the rest, I’m really just trying to make the best music that I can and have fun.

You moved out of Warwickshire to London in order to pursue your music career. Do you ever struggle to the peace and quiet required for song writing in the city?

I think the city is helpful for me, there’s always something going on, I find it hard to write anything anywhere else unless I’m on the road traveling. I’m still learning now how to write music but I can find quiet time in London.

We believe you have a second album in the works at the moment?

That’s correct, it’s close to being finished now which scares me, I want it to be the best it can be but not sure that’s possible. Hopefully you’ll have more to listen to next year.

Are you working on anything else?

Not really, I’m playing more piano, practicing guitar etc, normal musician stuff really.

What can we expect from you at the Arts Club on Thursday 16th October?

New songs, fun, we won’t have played a show for a while so we’ll be excited to be in a room playing again.
