You might have noticed something begin to stir over the summer months. Small ripples, slowly grew into waves and then as the air grew crisp and the trees grew bare, a twelve dimensional fluid began oozing out of Manchester.
As the Super Weird Substance gained momentum it spread across the UK via a series of happenings, creating a network of leftfield artists, astronauts and alchemists who all came together to add their imprint to the morphogenetic field.
As we prepare ourselves for the penultimate happening – which will see Liverpool’s creatives amalgamate in the Baltic Triangle’s CONSTELLATIONS / THE OBSERVATORY for a twelve hour extravaganza – we thought we’d reflect on some of the bizarre and beautiful creations encountered along the way…
DRY BAR, MANCHESTER // 19TH APRIL 2014
MELTING POT, GLASGOW // 26TH SEPTEMBER 2014
BARRY NEESON is a painter, illustrator and graphic designer with a particular interest in urban art. His work explores playfulness and corruption; mixes tattoo flash with Pantone markers; and has more than once involved baby heads made from expanding foam. He works on canvas and paper; with acrylic and spray-paint; in polymer clay and razorblades.

MARCUS HISLOP is part of The Notorious Gasoline Company, which was created way back in the early seventies, in the shadow of the Soviet-style Moss Heights. Fast forward to 2010 and in a vital bid to escape the rat race, TNGC became fully formed. With subjects ranging from classic film and comics to greats of music and icons of the 20th Century.

THE ISLAND, BRISTOL // 03RD OCTOBER 2014
CELIA ARIAS‘ artwork explores the blurring boundaries between dualities through mixed-media narratives. By using contrasting materials and elements like the organic and the artificial; old and new; chaos and order; luxury and discomfort, she aims to explore concepts such as contemporary identities and its extremes, the obsession with perfection and the poetics of the absurd.

JONO PATRICK BOYLE is fascinated by the cultural debris that society’s ever changing fashions leave behind. Whether working in paint, print, installation, fabrication or more traditional cut & paste techniques; he views all his work as collage. His work acts as a form of selective commentary, picking from the pool of discarded cultural memories like a DJ picks from the crates.

KATCHA BILEK is an upcycle-designer: you may be able to spot anything from bike wheels to circuit boards, and headphones to wing mirrors in her ethical art creations. You’ll have to look carefully though, as most of these “waste products” are so expertly reinvented that your focus will be on the fabulous custom-made art piece long before you notice that it’s recycled from discarded items.

Heavily influenced by her father, a world traveller and architect, and her mother, a university lecturer and author, MOLLY MACINDOE developed a love for international travel and visited many faraway places – documenting the many diverse cultures she encountered. However, her attention was always drawn back to the free party community and, since 1997, she has participated in and documented the underground scene.

For the past 10 years RAMONA CARRARO has been taking innovative and exciting images of artists, events and performers in the diverse and exciting world of theatre, music, festivals and television. Her work encapsulates a hidden quality. The voyeurs eye capturing images of intimacy otherwise lost in the moment.
