GhostChant // Interview

Everything seems to have fallen in place for Joe Cornwell in the past year or so. Working under the GHOSTCHANT moniker, Joe has made the enviable step up from bedroom producer to become one of BBE Record’s most hotly tipped new acts.

Currently working on his debut Sincerity LP, Joe has become a prominent figure in Liverpool’s underground circles, whilst also enjoying a national platform at big events like Bestival, where he played the BBC Introducing stage this summer.

Ahead of him playing our free party at SOUND FOOD & DRINK this weekend we thought we’d catch up with Joe to see where he’s at with the new album and what kind of stuff he’ll be playing for us…

How long have you been making music under the GhostChant guise?

I’ve been using it for about 3 or 4 years.

Had you been involved in anything else prior to that?

I had been involved in a couple of bands with a few mates at school. It was good fun, learning to play with other people and having a bit of fun. It didn’t really amount to anything too promising though.

Was there a particular artist that first got you interested in electronic music?

Tycho and Burial had a fairly big impact on me when I started producing electronic music.

Did you start DJing or producing first?

Producing. Then I started DJing about a year and a half later.

You’ve also developed live show; can you tell us about that?

It’s essentially me and my laptop with a couple of synths, an MPD and a guitar. Ocassionally I might have a guest vocalist performing with me. and I am trying to make that a regular thing.

Do you prefer DJing or playing live?

They both have their merits so its difficult to choose between them. There is also a time and place for them both.

You’ve had a pretty busy summer; I’m guessing the highlight was playing the BBC Introducing stage at Bestival?

Yeah that was pretty special. The crowd were awesome and the light display really added someting to it all.

We can’t wait to hear your debut LP Sincerity when it drops on BBE Records. When can we expect it?

It should be out February next year with a single release preceding it, as well as a couple of new remixes I have coming out.

Do you have a tour lined up for the album’s release?

Yeah details on that will be sorted closer to the time.

Will you be bringing any material from the album to Sound Food & Drink on 18th October?

No doubt there will be a couple of new bits at the show.
